Resumen:
The Family Text and the accompanying, Species Profiles constitute the first chapter of the 9th volume of The Handbook of Mammals of the World, entirely devoted to bats. Pteropodidae currently comprises a basic set of 197 species (more species are being described). The Family Text covers the Systematics, Morphological Aspects, Habitat, General Habits, Communication, Food & Feeding, Breeding, Movements, Home Range & Social Organization, Relationships with Humans, and Status & Conservation of this amazing bat family, supported by some 400 citations. The 191 species profiles (of which I authored 52 and coordinated the team of experts that contributed the other 139 profiles on an individual basis, formed by Victor Van Cackenberghe, Connor Burgin, Susan Tsang, Tyrone Lavery, Stephan Hintsche, Frank Bonaccorso, Francisca Almeida, and Brian O´Toole) cover information on Taxonomy, Distribution & Subspecies, Descriptive Notes (including measurements), Habitat, Food and Feeding, Activity patterns, Movements, Home range and Social organization, Breeding, Status and Conservation, and Bibliography of each extant species. Each species is beautifully illustrated in a set of 11 superb plates. A brief description of the six additional species classified as extinct is given in the Family Text.
