Efficient courts? A frontier performance assessment

This paper builds performance indicators to assess efficiency for First Instance Federal Courts (FIFC) in Argentina and studies the determinants of efficiency in Criminal Instruction Courts (CIC).The efficiency scores were determined using a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with a database for the period 2006?2010. Then, a search of the efficiency determinants in the CIC was performed.Four output-oriented models were developed based on various explanatory and environmental variables. This paper?s contribution is twofold: (i) estimate the relative efficiency for all FIFC in every jurisdiction and (ii) explain the differences in efficiency in the CIC.
