Globalisation and new standards for environmental and social responsibility have changed the context in which the aquaculture industry will function in the near future. The Atlantic Ocean is a shared resource that needs to be sustainably exploited and preserved by all the countries that surround it.In addition to the North Atlantic Research Alliance established between EU, Canada and USA (Galway Statement implementation), the European Commission has taken significant steps together with countries bordering the South Atlantic for moving towards an All Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance by developing a South Atlantic Flagship Initiative.During the Rio Conference of November 2015, the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation co-signed with the Brazilian Minister a Memorandum on Marine Research Cooperation. The Conference was followed by an aquaculture workshop on ?Brazil-EU multi-stakeholder interaction in aquaculture", held in Fortaleza on the occasion of the National Shrimp Fair (FENACAM) 2015 where the Marine Resources Unit of the European Commission, Brazilian and European representatives and several researchers and industry representatives participated. A follow-up meeting took place in Brussels on the 9th March 2016 to operationalise the recommendations from the Rio Conference. During this meeting, key headlines and recommendations on areas of common interest for the aquaculture sector were identified and the importance of reinforcing links between industrial partners (such as the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform - EATIP) for creating business opportunities were highlighted. Mobility and training have been recognised as a key success factors for reinforcing cooperation between the partners.
