The articles are organized into six conceptual groups. In the first section, the authors evaluate the development of the discipline in South America, and discuss future perspectives for the whole Southern hemisphere. The second section analyzes the cultural and natural processes that can affect the microfossil record through case studies from Australia and Argentina, as well as some new techniques and laboratory questions. In the third section, current silicophytoliths productive species are studied. The fourth section focuses on the regional problems of early and current environments, as well as on the impact that the study of phytoliths may have on them. This part of the volume contains articles from very different regions of America such as Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay. In the fifth section, we continue studying regional environments but now considering the cultural landscapes of Peru and Argentina. Finally, the sixth section focuses on the archaeological cases of processing, storage and consumption by means of remains in different types of instruments such as ceramic, stone and milling tools, and of human remains from Colombia and Argentina.
