Resumen:
The effect of biological treatment and the presence of a surfactant in alkaliimpregnation on the relative ion transport capacity of wood -the effectivecapillary cross sectional area (ECCSA) is shown. Capillarity is determined on basisof the analogy with the relation between the electrical conductivities of woodand liquid medium. When wood was biologically treated with three white rotfungi, the capillarity value in radial wood direction was clearly increased whichcan explain the advantages reported in the literature for biopulping andbioincising. On the other hand, the favorable effects of different surfactants inwood capillarity during alkali impregnation are also discussed. Surfactant clearlyenhanced the increment that alkali treatment produces. Finally, alkali profiles inwood show the faster impregnation induced by surfactant.
