Resumen:
New manufacturing technologies combined with the use of smart materials have fueled the design of lifting surfaces (such as aircraft wings and wind turbine blades) that adaptively change their shape and, in turn, have reduced the need for hinged control surfaces. This change of shape of lifting surfaces may be achieved by a local modification of the airfoil geometry. In this paper, a framework to study the change of shape and the unsteady aerodynamics of thick airfoils is presented. The change in the airfoil geometry is performed by the deformation of its camber line with a constant-length constraint. Regarding the aerodynamic model, the boundary layer is treated as a bounded vortex sheet of variable intensity, the wake is simulated as a system of vortex blobs, and the rate at which vorticity is shed from the trailing edge of the airfoil into the wake is determined by the unsteady Kutta condition.
