This paper deals with the nutrient limitation for phytoplankton growth in a floodplain lake of the Lower Paraná River (Entre Ríos, Argentina). The response of the phytoplankton community to the enrichment with nitrogen, phosphorus and N/P has been studied. For this purpose three samples were taken during different periods of 1991. Each sample was exposed to four treatments: controls, enrichment with P, with N and with N/P. Taxonomical changes and algal density fluctuaction were leasured during a 10 day period. The results of the three samples shown that both N and P could be limitant in this lake. During all the incubation period and in the three bioassays a distinct growth of the different algal population was observed. The factors that may control the growth of the different species are discussed.
