Algal assemblages in anoxic relictual oxbow lakes from the Lower Paraná floodplain (Argentina)

This study was conducted in a wetland from the Lower Paraná River (Argentina) from October 1998 to January 1999. The algal assemblages and the main limnological features of very vegetated water bodies were analyzed. The most important limnological characteristics were the anoxic conditions and the extremely poor light intensities. The composition of the algal assemblages strongly reflects these features. The algal flora includes many cyanobacteria species which are probably capable of anoxygenic photosynthesis, and heterotrophic ways seem to be important.
