Resumen:
A huge complex landslide located at 32° 43’ S - 69° 25’ W was geomorphologically, stratigraphically and chronologically studied. This rock avalanche, known as Placetas Amarillas, dammed a secondary gully causing the formation of a barrier-lake, as evidenced by relict lacustrine and diatomite deposits. This huge mass-movement is stratigraphically related to alluvial fans that are intercalated with tephra layers. Dating of a tephra layer by Ar-Ar method determined a Middle Pleistocene or older age for the landslide occurrence. This feature could be temporally correlated with other huge rock avalanche in the area, probably related to regional neotectonic activity.
