Resumen:
Background Acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) is the first enzyme involved in branched chain amino acids biosynthetic pathway. This enzyme is the active site of a large group of herbicides including the imidazolinone family. A variable number of ahas genes were identified in higher plants which vary from one to six. However, the presence of multiple ahas gene copies does not necessarily mean that they are all active and required for the plant development. Three genes coding for the AHAS catalytic subunit have been identified in Helianthus annuus L. (ahas1, ahas2 and ahas3) [1]. At present, the induced and natural mutations conferring imidazolinone resistance in sunflower were identified in ahas1 [1]. The aim of this work was to characterize the expression pattern of the sunflower ahas multigenic family in different tissues and developmental stages.
