Resumen:
Lymphomas are the most common neoplasms in AIDS patients. The spectrum of lymphoid malignancies includes non-Hodgkin´s (NHL) and Hodgkin´s lymphomas (HL). The aim of this study is to assess histological and immunohistochemical features and to determine its association with Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) infection in five pediatric cases of AIDS-associated lymphomas diagnosed in our hospital during the last decade. Methods: Immunohistochemical techniques using the Streptavidin-Biotin-Peroxidase method for CD20, CD3, CD30, CD15, CD45 and LMP-1 and in situ hybridization for EBERs were performed. Patients: Clinical background and histologic preparations were reviewed Three patients were boys. The age range was 2,6-11 years. Four of them were infected by mother to child transmission and one by transfusion. Primary localization of the tumors was: lymph node (3c), orbit (1c) and central nervous system (1c). In this patient the diagnosis was done on the autopsy. All of them died between 1 and 6 months after the onset of the malignant disease.  Histologic diagnoses were: Burkitt´s lymphoma (2c), Large cell lymphoma (1c), Follicular lymphoma (1c) and HD, lymphocytic depletion (1c). All NHLs were B cell. Results: All the studied cases (4c) were EBV by LMP-1 immunohistochemical detection and EBERs in situ hybridization. Conclusions: our results demonstrate a) a strong association of AIDS related lymphomas with EBV , b) NHL were of B cell origin, c) the finding of a follicular lymphoma and HD is remarkable, d) it should be stressed the fatal outcome of our cases.
