Current specific therapy consists of early administration of immune plasma. Ribavirin is the only compound that  has shown partial efficacy against JUNV infections but with a high level of undesirable secondary reactions.   ¨   JUNV is an enveloped virus containing a bisegmented ambisense RNA genome. Only five proteins are expressed from the two genome fragments; the nucleocapsid protein (NP), two envelope glycoproteins (GP1 and GP2), an RNA polymerase (L) and a 11-kD protein (Z or p11) with unknown function. The Z protein contains a RING finger motif with cysteines and histidine to bind Zn. The conservation of this domain in arenaviruses turns this protein an attractive target for antiviral therapy.   ¨   In the present study, several compounds with known reactivity toward the retroviral Zn finger motifs of the HIV-1 p7 nucleocapsid protein were evaluated for their capacity to act as arenavirus inhibitors. Different classes of electrophilic reagents with diverse chemical structures, provided by the National Cancer Institute (Frederick, USA) were tested against JUNV, Tacaribe virus(TACV) and Pichinde virus (PICV).
