Resumen:
Abstract While the relationship between poverty and health is self evident, it’s relevant standing out that deficit in health standards deepens and worsens poverty. During the last century, worldwide life expectancy at birth has markedly grown even more than in 2000 previous years. Similar progress in longevity has occurred in Latin-American countries, where life expectancy has jumped from 30-40 years near the beginning of XX.c to 73 years in 2005, especially during the last three decades. Nevertheless this increase was unequal and it’s still far from the figures achieved by developed regions. The strong connection between life expectancy and socioeconomic status, measured by income, education, housing, employment and distribution has been studied both in theoretical and empirical terms by numerous authors. In this article we estimate the impact of living conditions (reflected in per capita income and educational levels) in mean longevity in Latin American and Caribbean countries for 1975-2005, using a panel data econometric model.
