Resumen:
Kinetic behaviour of enrofloxacin (ENR) was studied in six rheas aged 3-5 months and weighed 2.4-3.5 kg. Baytrilâ10% i.s., was administered at 15mg/kbw dose i.v. and then i.m., following an 8 days washout period.  Enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin plasmatic levels were quantified using an HPLC/u.v technique. This compound was rapidly absorbed (Tmax=24,17 ± 8,21 min) and reached a high plasma levels (Cmax=3,30± 0.90mgr/ml). The absorption is complete with values of bioavailability around 100%. The high volume of distribution (5,01±1,18 L/Kg) could be suggesting a good tissue penetration, it is higher than that described in other avian and mamalian species. Moreover, clearance is rapid (Cl= 65,85±17,86 ml/kg min) wich explains the low detected plasmatic levels and the short maintenance after i.m. and i.v. administration. There is no differences in the elimination half-life time between the two routes studied (t1/2ßs.c.=146.93±40.82 min and t1/2ßi.m.=103.36±27,43 min, respectively). These result suggest that the absorption does not affect the elimination. Microbiological efficay indicators showed a high efficacy against the main bacteriological pathologies in ostriches clinics.
