Cronoestratigrafía del Paleozoico Superior de América del Sur: primera etapa de trabajo hacia una nueva propuesta

 The 1st Meeting of the Committee for Upper Palaeozoic Chronostratigraphy of South America was held within the framework of the XI Reunião de Paleobotânicos e Palinólogos (Gramado, Brazil, 2004), included researchers from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay and was coordinated by Carlos Azcuy. This meeting established the first step to discuss and establish a regional chronostratigraphic scheme for the Upper Paleozoic of South America. The present formal scheme established in Western Europe, Russia and the North America, has been defined using fossil assemblages that are not common in the region of Gondwana. All the participants considered the proposal and suggested that the best way to establish a regional chronostratigraphy would be to prepare a synthesis of all systematic and other palaeontological and radiometric works of Upper Palaeozoic basins in the region. At the meeting it was agreed to divide the task as follows, with Dr. Carlos Azcuy as overall Coordinator. The first results of the project were discussed in the framework of the XIII Simposio Argentino de Paleobotánica y Palinología (Bahía Blanca, Argentina, 2006) and a short communication in the 4th EMPSLA, (4th European Meeting on Paleontology and Stratigraphy of Latin American) was presented as well. The biostratigraphic units established for different basins of South America along with other data (more isolated and new information) are updated and discussed and a correlation chart supported by a list of selected references. RESUMEN. La 1ª Reunión del Comité de Cronoestratigrafía del Paleozoico Superior de América del Sur, tuvo lugar en el marco de la XI Reunião de Paleobotânicos e Palinólogos (Gramado, Brasil, 2004), incluyó invetigadores de Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay y fue coordinada por el Dr. Carlos Azcuy. Esta reunión constituyó la primera etapa para discutir y establecer un esquema cronoestratigráfico regional. Los esquemas formales actuales de Europa Occidental, Rusia y América del Norte, han sido definidos utilizando asociaciones fósiles que no son comunes en las regiones gondwánicas. Todos los participantes acordaron con la propuesta y sugirieron que la mejor vía para establecer una cronoestratigrafía regional debía comenzar por realizar una síntesis de todos los trabajos sistemáticos y otros paleontológicos y radimétricos realizados en cuencas del Paleozoico Superior de la región. En la Reunión fue acordado dividir las tareas como sigue más abajo, con el Dr. Carlos Azcuy como coordinador general. Los primeros resultados del proyecto fueron discutidos en el marco del XIII Simposio Argentino de Paleobotánica y Palinología (Bahía Blanca, Argentina, 2006). Las unidades bioestratigráficas establecidas en diferentes cuencas de América del Sur más otros datos (aislados e información reciente), fueron actualizados y discutidos y una nueva carta de correlación, avalada por una lista de referencias seleccionadas, es presentada.
