Resumen:
The subpolar regions of the Southern Hemisphere are affected by short periods of low total ozone values directly linked to overpasses of the ozone hole. These events often happen during spring and early summer time and the polar flames of ozone poor air travel northward to low latitudes as much as Buenos Aires (34 S). During these episodes, the subpolar regions experience a pronounced ozone reduction with generally an enhancement of UV‐B radiation, depending on cloud cover conditions. These events provoke that the sunbathing risks in human and animals increase considerably, and for that reason the UV radiation at ground level has been considered as environmental risk in South America. The South American Environmental Risk Network project (SAVER-Net) is an international project between Argentina, Chile and Japan, below the SATREPS cooperation program. In the framework of the project we use several techniques as Differential Absorption Lidar, ozone sondes and MM-wave radiometer to measure ozone profile and total ozone column and also to make measurements of spectral and broadband of UV radiation at ground level. These measurements are shared with different national and international database and distributed to the public through the UV index in web page platforms or through dedicated special dispositive (Solmaforos) that convert UV index measurements in international codified color light that permit the easy divulgation to the public of UV risk. In this paper we present a description of different photoprotections activities involved in the SAVER-Net project and a revision of the ozone and UV radiation monitoring actions that are just making or planned in the near future.
