Biocompatible hydrogels are akind of material that has great potential in biomedicine because itsstructure and properties are similar to the extracelular matrix. Inthe present work, the cell viability of human embryonic kidney(Hek-293) cell line exposed to different hydrogels, based on polyN-isopropylacrylamide(PNIPAM), was evaluated. Hek-293 cellshave been widely used in cell biology research for many years, because of their reliable growth and propensity for transfection.Cell adhesion on hydrogel surfaces was also analyzed. Thecytotoxicity of the cells exposed for 48 and 96 hrs was evaluatedthrough the MTT and neutral red tests. The cells were seeded ontohydrogels and their growth on the surface was observed during 6days through staining with Hoechst and Toluidine Blue. Theresults indicate that all evaluated hydrogels did not producetoxicity on the cell line. Cell growth on PNIPAM surfaces wasobserved. These results suggest that the studied hydrogels aregood candidates to use as scaffolds for Hek-293 for applications inthe field of regenerative medicine.
