Resumen:
The south American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a fruit fly pest in Argentina and other countries of the region. Wolbachia sp. are intracellular, maternally transmitted bacteria that infect a broad range of invertebrates. Characterization of Wolbachia infection in A. fraterculus will provide tools to understand its effects on the reproductive biology and the immune system of this pest applicable to improve environmentally friendly control strategies.? To assess the presence of Wolbachia pipientis in a laboratory strain of the South American fruit fly A. fraterculus (IGEAF strain). To characterize Wolbachia variants present in A. fraterculus IGEAF strain. Conclusions ? A. fraterculus of IGEAF strain is infected with Wolbachia pipientis belonging supergroup A. ? We identified two nucleotide variants of wsp gene fragment of Wolbachia in A. fraterculus. ? These two strains will be characterized in terms of their biological effects on A. fraterculus in IGEAF strain
