On the dynamics of thin shells of counter rotating particles

In this work we study the dynamics of self gravitating sphericallysymmetric thin shells of counter rotating particles, consideringseparately the cases where the radius is either constant or evolvingin time. In both cases we consider the possible velocitydistributions for the particles, and provide an analysis of thestability of the single particle orbits. This analysis leads to theconclusion that under given conditions, that are given explicitly,an evolving shell may split into one or more separate shells. Thesubsequent evolution of the system is also considered.
