Economic optimality in MPC: a comparative study

Model Predictive Control (MPC) is the most usedadvanced control strategy in the industries, mainly due to itscapability to fulfill economic objectives, taking into account adynamic simplified model of the plant, constraints, and stabilityrequirements. In the last years, several economic formulationsof MPC have been presented, which overcome the standardsetpoint-tracking formulation. The goal of this work is toprovide, by means of application to a highly nonlinear plant, acomparison of different strategies, focusing mainly on economicoptimality, computational burden, and economic performance.
