Resumen:
In 1991 breeding program was started at the Experimental Field of the Rosario Agronomy Faculty in order to obtain new adapted clones. During 1993/94 yield, vegetative and head quality traits were evaluated in a population of half sib families originated from the open pollination of selected varieties. A selection was held keeping a 5% of the plants. These plants were cloned and evaluated during 1995/96 in a randomized complete block design of two repetitions of five plants. Two local cultivars Ñato and Frances were included as checks. An ANOVA was conducted to analysis yield and head quality traits. Two clones 112 and 115 presented superior performance and were registered as Oro verde and Esmeralda respectively. Oro verde: Clone selected from the open pollination of (Ms x Reri). Semierect plant of an average 45 cm to the insertion of the first head and spineless pinatisects leaves. Grayish green sub-spherical compact head, of a 0.96 height/width ratio, and spineless and mucronates bracts. Harvests normally start on September 25th and continue along 32 days. Esmeralda: Clone selected from the open pollination of Cacique. Expanded plant of an average 40 cm to the insertion of the first head, and spineless pinatisects leaves. Green tronco-conical head of a 1.08 height/width ratio, and spineless bracts. Harvests normally start on September 30th and continue along 36 days.
