Resumen:
Globe artichoke improvement is based on the selection of progenies of outcrossed or selfed plants and the vegetative propagation of the elite clones. The objectives of the present work were to analyse in a group of 25 clones the genetic variability and the broad sense heritability and to identify clones with the best agroeconomic attributes. A randomized complete block design with two replications of eight plants per plot was used. Data were subjected to an analysis of variance. Highly significant (0,0001) differences were found among clones for all evaluated traits. Broad sense heritability values ranged from 0.27 to 0.84 demostrating that the genetic component of the total phenotypic variability varied from character to character. From the phenotypic correlation matrix, three principal components were obtained that comprised almost all the variability. Five groups of clones were formed with similar qualitative and quantitative characteristics. Group 1 and 3 included the top 12 clones in relation to yield, artichoke quality and plant size. These clones could be used as progenitors in future crosses of the breeding program. Furthermore, the selection of elite plants for breading purposes could be based only in a few productive traits.
