Resumen:
The objective of this paper was to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of hot spots in the Rio Gualeguay basin and the relationship between hot spot distribution and ground cover types. The study area was Rio Gualeguay basin centrally located in Entre Rios province, Argentina. The research materials were Landsat TM and Hotspots images from the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS). The methodology used supervised classification and object-oriented segmentation technique and the software module SEGCLASS from Idrisi. This module produces a final Map of Land Use and Land Cover. Afterwards, we combined the information on hot spots and the thematic map to obtain a frequency table on the annual distribution of hot spots by thematic classes. Our main results were a map of land use and cover of Rio Gualeguay Basin, and a table of annual frequency of hot spots coverage. The classes with higher incidence of heat sources were mainly three: "cultivated land areas and/or managed", "pastures" and "open forest". This information is important for fire management of the Rio Gualeguay Basin, and could be used as a decision tool in allocating resources. It also provides an overview of the spatial and temporal distribution of heat sources and land cover types that are burned.
