Resumen:
Gas chromatography (GC) is a very useful method to study the chemical reactions´ progress that produce gaseous specimens. In this work, this technique is used to evaluate the kinetics of calcium carbonate thermal decomposition in a furnace/GC on-line system. One of the several advantages of the GC method is the possibility to performe an in-situ characterization and quantification of the gaseous products in isothermal analysis in order to obtain kinetic parameters. On other hand, the technique is simple and it has a good senstivity to small amounts of the products. In addition, complementary studies of X ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and specific area and particle size measurements to relate morphological and microstructural characteristics with the kinetic behaviour were made. The decomposition kinetics of reagent grade and mineral calcium carbonates are also compared.
