Abstract: The process of urbanization in the Latin-American countries has evolved together with a growth of inequity and poverty generating an unbalanced development in the cities, even more in mid intermediate which have a higher rate of growth. This paper aims to elaborate a first approach to the relationship between poverty and migration in Bahía Blanca, and show how the expansion of the city can lead underdeveloped areas that do not share the same wealth level to better performing areas. To reach this goal, first we present a review of the link between migration and urban poverty within the economic theory; second, we follow a deductive approach to establish that relationship in different geographic scales; and finally we present the correlation between share of foreigners and share of local people with unsatisfied basic needs on each census radio in Bahía Blanca. The major conclusion that can be reached is that in Bahía Blanca there is a kind of migration that cannot be integrated to the economic dynamic of the whole city which draws up belts of misery.
