Resumen:
During the last decades, as a result of increasing concern about climate change consequences and depletion of the most important energy sources, the discussion of how to sustain the increasing energy demand in developing countries has arisen. Under this frame pursing sustainable practices of energy use and promote policies of renewable resources sound crucial for the development of this countries. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the problem of low RETS (Renewable Energy Technologies) penetration in the electricity mix of a group of 10 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay,  Perú, Bolivia Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela y Uruguay) , which belong or are associated to the Common South Market (MERCOSUR). The main objective will be identifying the principal current practice of these countries to encourage policies to promote energy renewable resources in a context of sustainable development path. To this purpose, we firstly analyze the core characteristic of each electricity system, secondly we will compare renewable promoting practice of these countries identifying the principal barriers and obstacles to introduce this type of technologies in the electricity mix.  Finally, we present the results of the comparative study in order to provide some policy recommendations for developing countries in relation to applying sustainable practices
