Resumen:
In the 80s, a Pliocene canid from Baja California Sur, Mexico, was describedas a new species of Cerdocyon, C. avius. Some authors considered this species related to theorigin of South American foxes of the tribe Cerdocyonina. Other interpretations suggestedthat it was related to members of the tribe Vulpini, as the Eurasian Nyctereutes or theAmerican Urocyon. Our observations and analysis confirm that it belonged to the vulpinegroup, but it is a different genus not previously described. We propose Ferrucyon gen. nov.,which includes one only species, F. avius. In the phylogenetic analysis, this species is relatedto North American Metalopex macconnelli, and with the Nyctereutes group
