Resumen:
Shells of the ribbed mussel Aulacomyaatra from the Patagonian gulfs of San Matý´as and SanJose´ (Argentina) are commonly bored by polydoridsand covered by serpulids and crustose coralline algae. As the co-occurring mussel Mytilus edulis is neitherbored by polydorids nor covered by coralline algae, wehypothesize that early or previous calcareous growthwould favour larval settlement and boring by polydorids.Generalized Linear Model analyses showedthat polydorid boring is indeed positively correlatedwith the abundance of serpulids and crustose corallinealga. Infestation by polydorids is higher in larger, older ribbed mussels due to their correspondinglyhigher available area for larval settlement. Increasingpolydorid infestation adversely affects the conditionindex of A. atra.
