Resumen:
This chapter describes the macrophyte responses to the environmental conditions that are imposed by effluents treated in constructed wetlands. The macrophytes growing in constructed wetlands have several properties in relation to the treatment process that make them an essential component of the design. The issues included in the chapter are: macrophyte role in constructed wetlands, species selection to be used in constructed wetlands, contaminant accumulation in plant tissues, changes in plant dominance, and plant responses to wetland conditions. The contributions showed in the chapter are focused on studies carried out in wetlands constructed for the treatment of industrial wastewaters and in natural wetlands of the Middle Paraná River floodplain, Argentina. These results may contribute to the design and maintenance of constructed wetlands.
