Resumen:
Two natural wetlands (NW1 and NW2) and two wetlands constructed for the treatment of industrial and sewage effluents (CW1 and CW2), located in Argentina, were studied. The aims were (1) to compare the accumulation and distribution pattern of P in the surface sediment of both natural and constructed wetlands, and (2) to evaluate P long-term retention in sediment. Similarities in water composition between NW2 and CW1 and between NW1 and CW2 were found and reflected in P accumulation and distribution in sediment. The highest P concentration in sediment was measured in NW2 and in the inlet area of CW1. P was mainly bound to inorganic fractions in all study sites. Due to water and sediment characteristics, most of the P present in the sediment of the four studied wetlands is retained and is not likely to be released into the water column. Study wetlands are highly efficient and sustainable in terms of P retention.
