Resumen:
Argentina produces approximately 15 million tons of maize per year. Among Fusarium species found in maize, F. subglutinans appear at significant frequencies. The aims of this study were:- to evaluate the genetic variation in a F. subglutinans population isolated from maize harvested in the main maize production area of Argentina, using vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) analysis and AFLP molecular markers and – to determine the toxigenic profile of the isolated strains. Among 96 strains isolated, 37 strains from mating population “E” were placed into 20 VCGs. Based on AFLP markers was possible to demonstrate the presence of clones. Sexual reproduction will be not frequent among members of this population. The production of fusaproliferin, beauvericin and fumonisins was detected among the strains. Co-production of the toxins was observed. The toxigenic ability of the strains prompts us to consider the evaluation of natural occurrence of fusaproliferin and beauvericin besides fumonisins in maize harvested in Argentina.
