Extracellular Mg21 controls the activation of the Salmonella PhoP/PhoQ regulatory system. One of the adaptive responses driven by PhoP/PhoQ includes the transcriptional induction of mgtA and mgtCB, which encode two P-type Mg21 regulatory system.
