Magnetite particles coated with silica were used as carriers for depositing titanium dioxide. Photocatalysts were obtained by the sol-gel technique at low temperature using titanium isopropoxide. Modification in the silica network, by incorporating a surfactant, was introduced to enhance the formation of a mesoporous structure. The photocatalytic activity of solids was evaluated in the degradation of tartrazine dye, coloring matter widely used in the food industry. Our results indicated that deposition of the mesoporous silica-titania produce an enhanced in the photocatalytic activity.
