Resumen:
The work is part of the modification of a commercial air extractor, which was placed in the chimney venting a catalytic system, evaluating the elimination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as methyl ethyl ketone, chloroform, toluene, m-xylene, o-xylene and p-xylene. We studied the catalytic activity of systems based on platinum, manganese oxide and manganese oxide doped Pt, all supported on bentonite monoliths. Choosing to eliminate VOCs was conducted based on a characterization of indoor air in several Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), households and schools in the city of La Plata and surroundings, using 3M passive diffusion monitoreadores 3500 and subsequent analysis by gas chromatography. Among the items SMEs, we analyzed chemical, textile mills, electrical and painting, food and house local copies, found the highest levels of VOCs in the electromechanical and painting workshop followed by chemical analysis laboratories along with the workshop textiles. As for the homes and schools levels of VOCs detected were similar to each other. The results of catalytic activity indicate a better functioning of the mixed catalyst of platinum / manganese on the catalysts of platinum and manganese. The Pt catalyst activity was higher than that of study manganese oxides catalysts although the three systems were able to reduce the emission of chloroform, detecting the formation of hydrochloric acid in the gaseous effluent. The results show that these catalytic systems can be coupled satisfactorily in the venting of the air extraction equipment still working at high flow rates.
