Resumen:
GIS Andes, a homogeneous information system of the entire Andes Cordillera, was designed and developed by BRGM from original compilations. Covering an area of 3.83 million km² over a distance of some 8500 km between the Guajira Peninsula (Colombia) and Cape Horn (Tierra del Fuego), the GIS was conceived as a tool primarily for the mining and academic sectors. Its potential for the former is as an invaluable aid in mineral exploration and mine development; that for the latter is as a stimulus for developing new metallogenic models (Cassard, 1999; Cassard et al., 2001; http://gisandes.brgm.fr/).
