Offshore breakwater design optimization for the Argentine coastal protection

The oceanfront shoreline at the South of Punta Mogotes, near Mar delPlata city (Figure 1), has been facing a progressive erosion of their sandycoasts from many years. Possible causes of the sediment deficit include bothnatural processes: wave action, sea level rise and storm surges, and processesassociated to the human activities: urbanization, dune consolidations andinefficient coastal structures along the coast. As part of the Coast ProtectionProject (M.I.V.S.P., 2005), a detached breakwater system was designed to stopthe coastal erosion and to allow the beach renourishment. The main objective ofthis numerical modelling is then to improve and optimize such a preliminarydesign.
