Resumen:
The Pilcomayo River is strategic for the development of northern Argentina, especially the provinces of Salta andFormosa. The Pilcomayo River rises and forms its active basin (i.e. where the waters and sediments originate)network, almost totally in the Republic of Bolivia. Further downstream up to the region of ?La Embocadura,? itbecomes the border between Argentina and Paraguay, where the waters are divided between both countries. Theriver finally continues its natural course through El Bañado, La Estrella AND Río Monte Lindo.Villamontes (VM, Bolivia) gauge station provides the flow entering Argentina/Paraguay, and Misión La Paz(MLP, Argentina) gauge station give the flow to ?La Embocadura?.With help of satellite images and hydrographs in both mentioned above stations it is possible to estimate theflooded areas by the river as a consequence of its overflows. The ultimate aim of this work is to forecast the area flooded by ?El Chañaral? overflow, based on the flows inVillamontes, 140 km upstream. On the basis of the calculation of overflows front velocities and overflow date wecan then compute the flooded areas and estimate its borders.
