Drought processes of different intensities affect several regions of Argentina. In the central region, where agriculture and livestock rearing are the main activities, the analysis and assessment of droughts becomes crucial for the economy and strategic planning. Moreover, in this region some of the country´s major cities are located. In this paper we analyze the spatial variability of meteorological droughts in the study area using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), taking also into account the influence of ENSO phenomenon. To identify sub-areas influenced by phenomena of hydro-meteorological deficit we applied different criteria and statistical multivariate analysis on series of average annual rainfall (which was considered a variable representative of the processes that are studied in this work). We used monthly rainfall series of 16 stations located in the provinces of Cordoba, Santa Fe and Entre Rios, for the period 1980-2009. We identified 3 groups of stations with a similar rainfall behavior, which allows the identification of spatial scales or sub-areas influenced by phenomena of hydro-meteorological deficit.
