Resumen:
Item response theory (IRT) has a prominent history in educational measurement and test scoring (Hambleton, Swaminathan & Rogers, 1991). However, this paradigm, while widely used in cognitive assessment, has been applied more sporadically in personality literature. Although there have been some positive applications of IRT to personality data there are still a few unresolved difficulties. In this article we analyze advantages and difficulties of applying IRT in personality measurement. We believe that, in spite of the difficulties encountered upon the application of IRT model to personality assessment, the advantages of this model over the classical one, as to accuracy in personality evaluation and measurement, justify its use and the efforts that must be made in order to overcome the problemsthe advantages and difficulties of applying IRT in personality measurement.
