USE AND SITUATION OF WILDLIFE IN THE LOWER DELTA OF THE PARANA RIVER, ARGENTINA. Presently, the Paraná River Delta is an economically depressed region, being fish and wildlife the basis of the income of its habitants. Vertebrate species related to their present population status and the different kinds of uses are presented. Manunals and fishes are the most affected groups and their utilization is concentrated on rather few species (Myocastor coypus, Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris, Prochilodus platensis and Pseudoplatystoma sp.). Nearly 100% of the threatened or endangered species are being used or have been subjected to some kind of use that has lead them to that status (Lontra longicaudis, Blastocerus dichotomus). Human pressure in combination with recent extraordinary floods, have set most species in a delicate state, needing the implementation of management actions in order to prevent the faunal deterioration.
