Resumen:
Use of nesting resources and breeding habitat features for skuas (Catharacta spp.) and Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) were studied at Cierva Point, Antarctic Peninsula during the 1992-1993 breeding season. Material from 126 skua and 51 gull nests found in ten habitat types was analyzed. Plant censuses were conducted to evaluate the availability of the species more commonly used. Highest skua nest aggregatios were found in areas with the highest moss cover, while the highest abundance of gull nests were in areas with high cover of Deschampsia antarctica. Skuas used mainly Polytrichum alpestre as nest material, while gulls used mainly D. antarctica. No association was found between the overall nest material of skuas and gulls, indicating independence in the use of the nesting resources between both bird groups.
