Resumen:
A large number of binary intermetallic compounds of
composition AB2 -where A is generally an electropositive
metal and B a less electropositive transition metal- are
found to crystallize in one of these three tetrahedral
close-packed structures (TCP), known as Laves Phases:
MgCu2-type cubic structure (space group Fd3m) and
MgZn2 or MgNi2 types hexagonal structures (P63/mmc).
After the Strukturbericht designation, the structures are
also called C15, C14 and C36, respectively.
In particular, C14 and C15 phases have been studied
extensively due to their promising behavior as solid state
hydrogen storage materials.
