Martensitic Transformation in Cu-Mn-Al Alloys

Resumen:
The Cu-Mn-Al alloys exhibit, in a certain range of composition, an A2 (BCC) phase which is stable at high temperatures (around 105OK). Two ordering reactions take place on lowering the temperature AZ-B2 and B2-L2, (l), with a distribution of antiphase domains (2). Spinodal decomposition can be found in the as quenched specimen for some compositions, as shown by Sato et al. (3). In addition a marmnsitic transformation can also occur, with an Ms strongly dependent on the composition (4,5,6,7,8). Some authors (9) have reported the appearance of superparamagnetism at lower tempemmres, for alloys with low manganese content but exhibiting the marte&ic transformation. In this work the dependence ofthe Ms on composition is investigated, for alloy compositions along the Cu, Al-C& * lit~ of the ternary phase diagram. The results, together with other data taken from the literature, are analyzed in terms of a model, based on the pair interchange energies, developed by Ahlers (10).
