Resumen:
Based on recent ethnographic and quantitative research conducted by the authors, this book challenges received notions regarding the centrality of psychoanalysis in Argentina and Brazil, and questions the very notion of the emergence and development of a ?modern therapeutic culture? in the urban sectors of Latin America more generally. Considering the real importance of psychoanalysis in the everyday experience of the urban population, the authors ask what the meaning is of ?being in therapy? for different sections of society and which practices are considered as ?therapeutic?, while also discussing the ways in which psychoanalysis and other ?modern? forms of therapy compete, or become hybridized, with other practices (including some of religious nature) aimed at managing spiritual distress.
