Resumen:
The propagation of fatigue cracks from weld defects at the toes of manual and automatic T-plate joints in a structural steel was studied in this work. It was found that the evolution of aspect ratios (a/c) and surface growth of cracks are dependent on the mismatch between the planes of adjacent growing surface cracks, which determined the depths at which these toe cracks coalesced. Crack mismatch and depth to coalescence were found to be much smaller in the case of automatic welds, which also showed shorter fatigue initiation and propagation lives. An LEFM model of crack growth is presented, in which the parameters defining early fatigue growth are determined
