Resumen:
This paper is about slurs, i.e., expressions that are prima facie associated with the speaker´s conveyance of a derogatory attitude towards the members of certain groups of people identified in terms of their origin or descent (´spic´), race (´nigger´), sexual orientation (´faggot´), ethnia or religion (´kike´), genre (´girl´), political ideology (´fascist´), habits or ways of living (´slut´), etc. Our aim is two-fold: (i) we distinguish between, on the one hand, basic or predicative occurrences of slur-words and, on the other hand, derived or epithetic occurrences, (ii) we defend a dualist semantics for the former and a purely non-truth-conditional semantics for the latter, underwritten by the different syntactic configuration of the sentences containing them.
