Resumen:
This Conference is entitled “Collective Memory and the uses of the past”. Let me begin with the phrase “uses of the past”. The only way we can “use” a thing or an object is when this thing or object has a meaning for us. In this sense, we can use the past as an object of knowledge as, for example, in historiography. Or we can use it in a political way as, for example, when we legitimate a present order appellant to the past. Or we can “use” it in a moral way as when we restore justice to actual victims of actions committed in the past. But I think that it is not so easy to understand what we mean when we speak about “collective memory”. This paper deals with two profoundly related subjects: collective memory and history of the present or history of the recent past. Firstly, I will try to define what I understand by “collective memory”. Secondly, I will do the same with “history of the present”. Finally, I will show some difficulties in applying the concept of trauma as an analytical social category to analyze both of them.
