Experimental and theoretical studies using the shellwise local plasma approximation on L x-ray production cross sections in some high-Z atoms by silicon ions

Total L x-ray production cross sections in73Ta, 78Pt,90Th, and 92U ions have been measuredby 3-5 MeV/u 28Si , in different charge states q = 8+ up to 12+. We found that the measured crosssections do not differ with the charge state of the projectile ions, but they vary with the beamenergies. Comparison of these measured cross sections with the available theories using themultiple-hole fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields, show the best agreement with theECUSAR results, while the ECPSSR values underestimate by up to a factor of two and theFBA overvalue by up to a factor of three. We also compare the present measurements withthe SLPA values, which describe the experiments quite good for 74W, 79Au and 83Bi, butcertain differences are observed for 82Pb. Surprisingly, the theoretical-experimentalagreement is better at low beam energies than in the high beam energy side.
