This study was conducted in order to assess the ability of Schoenoplectus californicus to bioconcentrate PCBs. Bulrush tissues and sediments were collected from input and output creek areas. PCBs analyses were carried out by GC-ECD. Samples from the input creek area showed the higher PCBs levels as a result of contaminants washed down from upstream areas. Bulrush roots accumulated the highest concentrations. Congeners 101, 118 and 153 predominated in sediments and roots. The sediments constitute the main source for contaminants to bulrush. This macrophyte can be used as a tool for field studies of PCBs pollution monitoring and remediation.
