ABSTRACT.In this paper we report the copulationbehavior of the Greater Rhea (Rhea americana),a species in which males defend a harem of females.We describe the females behavior during 14 copulationevents observed from 19951997 at Buenos Airesprovince, Argentina. During copulations, females performeda more active role than previously suggested.Moreover, on three occasions we observed that haremfemales performed a complex copulation solicitationdisplay, forming a closed circle to attract the male. Wehypothesize that this display could be a reliable signalto the male of the tendency of females to be inseminatedand lay eggs communally.
